Albatros project

Mediterranean Sea-Bird Observatory

Mediterranean small islands provide a nesting place for numerous emblematic seabirds, many of whom are endemic of the Mediterranean Sea. Some of these species, like shearwaters or stormy petrels (smaller cousins of the albatros), spend most of their life at sea but find refuge on islands when they come to reproduce. Additionally, birds of prey, such as Eleonora’s falcons and ospreys nest on the cliffs or on rocky peaks of small islands, far away from the human disturbance. Thus, islands  are crucial to these  bird species survival.
The aim of the Albatros project is to harmonise sea bird monitoring methods across the whole Mediterranean Sea, in order to compare and learn more about the biology of these species and their interactions with other sea life, to the water quality and to the availability of marine resources. Monitoring the reproduction of the sea birds will ensure the protection symbolic Mediterranean species but also determine the health of their environment.
